Caribbean Flair with Dutch Charm

When you head towards the Willemstad port on the Caribbean island of Curaçao by cruise ship, the striking backdrop immediately catches your eye. The island's historic capital is world-famous for its colorful rows of Dutch colonial-style houses, which sit directly on the deep blue water and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best part for cruisers: the port is a classic docking port. This means your ship is moored at the pier and you can walk straight off the ship without having to wait for a tender boat. Since the main attractions are directly adjacent to the berths, the city can be explored wonderfully and easily on foot on your own.

Punda and Otrobanda: Two Districts, One Bridge

The harbor entrance divides the historic old town of Willemstad into two very different, exciting districts: Punda and Otrobanda.

Otrobanda, which translates to "the other side", is located right next to the modern cruise piers. This district has developed into a lively cultural center in recent years. As you stroll through the cobblestone streets, you will encounter colorful street art, restored colonial buildings, and cozy squares.

On the opposite side lies Punda, the historic heart of the city. Here you will find the famous Handelskade – that iconic row of narrow, brightly colored houses that form the classic postcard motif of Curaçao. Punda invites you to take a relaxed stroll with its pedestrian zones, small boutiques, and shady alleys.

The Heart of the City: The Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge

To get from Otrobanda to Punda, the best way is to use the city's most spectacular footpath: the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge. This unique wooden bridge floats on a total of 16 pontoons directly on the water.

The special thing about the bridge: when a ship wants to enter or leave the port, the entire bridge is swung to the side of the Otrobanda shore by motors. If the bridge opens just as you want to cross over, it is not a problem. In this case, a free ferry shuttles between the two districts, so you can continue your walk without much delay. By the way, from the bridge you have the absolute best view of the colorful Handelskade and your own cruise ship.

Local Specialties and the Best Photo Spots

After crossing the bridge and arriving in Punda, you should definitely visit the Floating Market. Here, traditional wooden boats dock to sell fresh, exotic fruits, vegetables, and freshly caught fish. It is a wonderfully bustling place full of scents and colors, where you can experience authentic island life up close.

For the perfect souvenir photo of your time ashore, several spots are ideal:

  • The Handelskade: It is best to photograph the colorful rows of houses from the Otrobanda side or directly from the Queen Emma Bridge.
  • The large letter signs: In the city's parks, you will find the giant three-dimensional signs "CURAÇAO" and "Punda", which are popular backdrops for a souvenir photo.
  • The colorful alleys: In the side streets of Punda, look out for the artistically designed facades and the hanging colorful umbrellas that span the streets.

Before heading back on board your ship, it is worth taking a look at the local shops. Curaçao is world-famous for its deep blue liqueur, Blue Curaçao, which is made from the peels of the native Laraha orange. A perfect souvenir to take a piece of the Caribbean back home with you.
