Extra Cruise Costs: Keep an Eye on New Fees and Taxes

When planning your next cruise, you should keep an eye on additional fees along your route in addition to the cruise fare itself. As reported by the ÖAMTC, several popular travel destinations are currently introducing new levies for cruise passengers. This affects both classic Mediterranean destinations and long-haul voyages.

New Fees in Europe and Overseas

According to the ÖAMTC, travelers must prepare for various new payments:

• Iceland: Since the beginning of 2025, an infrastructure fee of 2,500 Icelandic Krónur (approx. 18 Euros) has been charged. This fee applies to everyone on board – even if you do not leave the ship in port at all.
• Greece: Also starting in 2025, a fee is levied on passengers going ashore. The amount depends on the season and the destination. On particularly popular islands such as Santorini (famous for its caldera views) or Mykonos (renowned for its windmills and Little Venice), the fees can be higher.
• Mexico: Here, the tourism tax was doubled in August 2026 from five to ten US Dollars (about nine Euros) per person.
• Japan: Since July 2026, the country has charged a national departure tax of 3,000 Yen (around 17 Euros) when leaving by ship or plane.

Compare Onboard Extra Costs Carefully

In addition to government taxes, the club advises checking the cruise lines' inclusive services carefully before booking. Depending on the fare, extra costs may arise for specialty restaurants, spa areas, beverage packages, or organized shore excursions.

Furthermore, the ÖAMTC warns of cost traps when using mobile phones at sea. Since mobile phones on the water often connect to expensive satellite networks, using your smartphone in port – especially within the EU – or via the cruise lines' paid Wi-Fi packages is significantly cheaper.

Important Documents and Preparation

For a smooth journey, the club recommends always carrying a passport that is valid for at least another six months. Most cruise lines require this even for itineraries that run exclusively within the European Union. Planning a generous amount of time for your journey to the port is also advisable to meet the scheduled embarkation time stress-free.
