AIDA Cruises Tests Digital Self Check-In in Hamburg

For your next cruise departing from the Hafen Hamburg, checking in could soon be much faster. The cruise line AIDA Cruises has tested a new system that allows you to complete the check-in process independently at a kiosk in the terminal. The first practical test took place on July 23, 2026, at the Cruise Terminal Hamburg-Steinwerder with guests sailing on AIDAprima.

Digital Verification in the Terminal

According to AIDA Cruises, twenty digital check-in terminals were available to passengers for the test run. At these devices, you scan your ID documents. The identity verification is completed via an automatic biometric comparison between the photo on your ID and a current photo taken of you directly at the terminal. For security reasons, this photo remains stored in the ship's system for the duration of the voyage.

Your boarding card is also printed at the terminal. This card is equipped with an RFID code and serves as both your cabin key and your onboard payment method during your cruise on AIDAprima.

Collaboration with IT Specialists

According to the cruise line, the technology was developed over a period of two years in cooperation with Lufthansa Industry Solutions AS GmbH from Norderstedt. The biggest challenge in transferring the self-service concept from the aviation industry to the cruise sector was connecting it to the ship's own systems and integrating the card printers.

The new procedure is designed to shorten waiting times in the terminal and make the start of your vacation more flexible. However, according to AIDA Cruises, guests do not have to rely solely on the technology: personal service at the traditional counters as well as assistance from the crew on site will remain available.

The cruise line has not yet disclosed whether or when the system will be permanently introduced at other ports. According to the company, the results of the current pilot phase in Hamburg will first be evaluated to decide on the future deployment of the technology.
